Matthew C. Matheny, Provost Umphrey partner, has been accepted into the American Board of Trial Advocates (ABOTA).
ABOTA dedicates itself to the preservation and promotion of the Seventh Amendment, which guarantees the right to civil jury trials. Members in this prestigious invitation-only group must have tried a minimum of 10 civil jury trials to conclusion. More than 7,600 lawyers and judges are involved in ABOTA chapters in all 50 states.
“ABOTA is one of the nation’s most effective organizations in championing the ethics, professionalism and principles of the legal profession, and I’m honored to be part of this select group,” says Matheny.
Matheny has handled a wide range of matters including industrial explosion accidents, on the job injuries, automobile accidents, wrongful death cases, maritime and offshore accidents, railroad crossing accidents, aviation accidents, environmental contamination, chemical exposure, Federal Employers’ Liability Act, Fair Labor Standards Act-Overtime Wage claims, Deceptive Trade Practices, Bad Faith Insurance Claims and mass tort and class actions.
Recently, Matheny recovered nearly $16 million for his client who was seriously injured on the job and is currently spear-heading his firm’s human trafficking litigation.
Matheny graduated from Baylor Law School in Waco, Texas and completed his undergraduate degree from Rhodes College in Memphis, Tennessee. Matheny is Board Certified in Personal Injury Trial Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization. He has earned recognition on the Super Lawyers and Best Lawyers in America listings each year since 2015 and received Lawyer of The Year honors in 2023 and 2018 for Mass Tort and Class Action Litigation. Matheny was also recently named to the prestigious Lawdragon’s 500 Leading Plaintiff Consumer Lawyers Listing.
On weekends in the fall, Matheny has served as a guide in the Texas Hill Country for Operation Orphan, a nonprofit organization that provides outdoor activities to orphaned and abused children. He is an active participant in Southeast Texas civic events and charities including Calder Baptist Church, Some Other Place, the Shorkey Center, The Neches River Festival and The Julie Rogers Gift of Life Program. Matheny has lectured at the Lamar University’s College of Nursing and is an active supporter of Lamar University athletics. Matheny is currently a member of the Board of Trustees at All Saints Episcopal School and sits on the board of directors for Beaumont Mainstreet.
